Belper schoolgirl Ami Stone-Payne has turned in two impressive displays recently while competing in open water swimming events.
The 13-year-old, a Year Eight pupil at Belper School, was first female back in the Great Swim at Lake Windermere, and followed this up by being second female back in the Big Swim, held at Holme Pierrepont, near Nottingham. The races were held over half a mile and one mile respectively.
Ami, a member of Derby Phoenix Swimming Club, only started open water swimming last year.
Mum Elaine explained: “She saw it on the TV one day and she said she wanted have a go at it. Ami’s done less than ten races so far but has really taken to it. She’s not over big for her age but she always makes sure she gets near the front when they have to run into the water to get into a good position, and she’s done really well so far.
“She’s been up against a wide range of ages, including those in their 40s and 50s, and to finish where she has done is really good, so we’re delighted.
“She’s sponsored by ETS Tyres and we’d to say a big thank you to them for their support.”
Next is an open water event at Colwick on July 21 and, later in the year, events at Combs Reservoir and Loch Lomond.
