Belper Hockey Club’s under 18s boys team has made it through to the national finals weekend of the Under 18s Boys National Cup after a thrilling quarter final victory over Cannock.
Having been unable to book pitch time at Belper due to the EH County In2 Hockey Tournaments being played there, Belper U18 Boys moved camp to Repton School for the match.
From the word go, this was a fast tempo game with adrenaline running high – and that was just for the spectators.
Belper made a good start and held Cannock for the first ten minutes.
Then two goals in quick succession (Dom Bennett, James Casha) gave the home team a good base to defend, which they did comfortably until half-time.
After the break, Cannock penned Belper in, and pulled a goal back, from a penalty corner, within five minutes of the restart.
Cannock piled the pressure and were rewarded with the equaliser. Cannock had the upper hand and, thanks to sterling work by the defensive back line, Belper did well to stay on level terms until full time.
The match was decided by the best of five penalty flicks.
Charlie Falkingham, in goal for Belper, saved three out of the first four Cannock attempts while Dom Bennett, Ben Clague and Robbie Astin all scored for Belper.
Belper now progress to the National Cup and Plate Finals Weekend at Old Loughtonians HC, where they have drawn Peterborough in the semi-final on Saturday, March 29.
The quarter final squad was Charlie Falkingham, Harri Johnson Evans, Robbie Astin, Dom Bennett, James Casha, Ben Clague, George Collier, Alex Cox, Tom Farr, Jack Forrest, Chris Handley (captain), Toby Hooker, Ben Hurst, Joel Mitchell and George Murfin. Not available, due to first team duty were Jacob Bullock and Alex Robey.
