In what could turn out to be a handover of the title, Belper Strutt Club sank defending champions Edgefold Club Matlock No.1 in the Darley Dale and District Snooker League.

Strutt eased to an impressive 4-1 away victory to go a point clear at the top of the Harriotts Sweet Chariot Event Planning-sponsored league with just one round of matches to go.

For Edgefold, Rob Muxlow’s 34 won him the highest break of the week award for the second successive time, but he still went down 75-70 to Wayne Shooter, who has been a tough nut to crack this season and took a black-ball decider.

Strutt’s lead was increased by Mark Newby with a 62-42 verdict and although Duncan Harwood pulled one back with a convincing 79-47 success, the Belper side sealed their triumph with further wins from Ben Monk, who beat Andy Russell 64-30, thanks largely to a run of 30, and then teamed up with Steve Bullock to defeat Russell and Harwood 63-25 and take the player of the week accolade.

The biggest threat to Strutt’s title chances are Alfreton Palmer Morewood, who kept up the pressure with a 3-2 win at Edgefold No.2, who are the Belper side’s final opponents tonight (Wednesday). It was all-square going into the doubles leg, but Jamie Rowland and Simon Mayes made no mistake, winning 58-13.
