A dual century-break maker in former years, Belper Strutt Club’s Ben Monk almost made it a coveted hat-trick in the semi-finals of the OMYA Individual Scratch Cup in the Darley Dale and District Snooker League.
With a possible 140-plus available, Monk rattled the pink on 94 as he took on Edgefold Club Matlock No.1’s Andy Russell, who also notched a ton himself last season. The clash-of-the-titans semi eventually went the way of Russell, who triumphed 3-2 with the help of a break of 34 after a pulsating contest, and reached his second successive final in the competition.
Monk gained some form of consolation because Strutt Club shot two points clear at the top of the league thanks to a 4-1 win at Matlock Club, coupled with a 3-2 defeat for their closest rivals, Bolehill Institute No.1. Graeme Wood put Matlock in front but from then on, the Strutt juggernaut moved in to overdrive with Wayne Shooter, Steve Bullock and Justin Weller reeling off successive frames before Bullock and Mark Newby put the icing on the cake in the concluding doubles.
Bolehill fell at home to Matlock Golf Club, despite the highest break of the week (32) from Ricki Slack. Black-ball victories for Ian McKay (on a re-spot) and Graham Jones (by a solitary point from 35 adrift) proved pivotal before Nick Kay and Jack Lynch secured the deciding pairs leg.
Bolehill No.2 won 4-1 at Edgefold No.2, while Alfreton Palmer Morewood edged out Edgefold No.1 3-2.
