Relieved Belper Pottery lifted themselves off the bottom of the Second Division in the South Derbyshire Men’s Bowls League after a fine 8-4 victory over leaders Etwall.

The home side won by 178 shots to 162, with 21-7 successes from Steve Bennett and Cliff James. Also in winning form were Billy Marshall, Martin Stewart, Geoff Povey and John Marshall.

Despite going down 8-4 to Horsley A, the early-season leaders of Division Three are Hazelwood. But Belper Meadows recorded a fortunate 7-5 victory at home to Foremans Club after the visitors’ final player failed to turn up. It meant Foremans had to concede that game 21-0, leaving the aggregate shots’ score 153-150 in favour of Meadows whose winners were Graham Sheldon, Neil Ratcliffe, Terry Fletcher and John Hopkinson.
