Hail and rain helped to make it a chilly start to the new bowls season for teams and players in the Belper area.

But it failed to prevent Holbrook getting off to a flier in the First Division of the Belper Saturday Singles League as they beat newly-promopted Belper Pottery 9-3. Paul Mable (21-8), who is pictured, and Pete Haywood (21-11) led the way in the visitors’ victory by 190 shots to 160.

The weather was no better the previous night for action in the South Derbyshire Men’s League. Belper Pottery went down to Swadlincote Caths in Division Two, despite success for Simon Beetlestone and Eddie Marshall, while Belper Meadows beat Stretton A 10-2 (193 shots to 172) in the Third Division after fine wins by Neil Ratcliffe (21-11) and Phil Weightman (21-12).

Earlier in the week, Hazelwood got their Third Division campaign off to the best possible start with an 11-3 victory away to Denby.
