Cycle vets beat hills

Days before this weekend’s National Masters Track Championships, Belper’s vets opted for different approaches to the task in hand.

Mick Allen chose to ride a ten mile time trial in north Notts, riding to a commendable 22 minutes 38 seconds in blustery conditions to take 8th place.

Considering many of the other competitors were much younger than him this was a great achievement.

Belper’s other vets, Derrick Woodings, Bill Cotton and Jon Marshall, were riding the Barton R.C. road race. Jon was down for the 40-49 age race, ten laps of a 5.5km circuit.

Derrick and Bill joined the 60+ race over eight laps.

This short circuit just South of the Humber Bridge was surprisingly hilly considering the general nature of the surrounding flat terrain.

In the 40-49 race Jon performed extremely well and took a runner up slot in the final sprint for the line, his first podium place in this type of racing this year.

Derrick and Bill rode a consistent race for the older competitors.

Derrick and Bill finished 6th and 7th. Bill finished 4th in his age category and Derrick again won his category.
