Two Derby College students have been selected to represent England Schools Golf Association to play against Scotland in September at West Kilbride Golf Club, Ayreshire.
Will Painter (Kedleston Park GC) and Niall Quinn Jarvis are both members of the college’s Performance Golf Academy player training programme, based at Morley Hayes Golf Club.
They gained selection following their performances in the English Schools Championships, played over the world-renowned championship course at Hollinwell Golf Club
Will and Niall finished in the top 12 at Hollinwell, which gained them an international cap to represent England against Scotland on Monday, September 9. Will returned scores of 77 and 73 and Niall scored 76 and 74.
Their selection outlines the strength of the player pathway available in Derbyshire schools. Both players qualified to represent Derbyshire from their performances in the Derbyshire Schools Golf Championships at Chevin Golf Club in Duffield in early May.
They then represented Derbyshire in the Midlands Schools Championships at Northants County Golf Club at the end of May, where they qualified to play in the English Schools Golf Championships at Hollinwell.
Commenting on their selection, Performance Golf Academy programme manager Nigel Furniss commented: “I am absolutely delighted for both Will and Niall. It is a great honour to be asked to represent your country. When we set up the Performance Golf Academy six years ago, one of our goals was to help young players gain national selection, following Greg Tickell’s selection for Wales Boys last year, this shows we are delivering a great programme for young players with aspirations to improve their golf.”
He added: “It also demonstrates what a great player pathway we have in schools golf in Derbyshire for which John Barker must be congratulated for developing over recent years.”
