Belper Rugby Club’s Fletcher Smith has been announced as one of the Derbyshire Sports Awards winners, in a ceremony held at The Roundhouse in Derby.

Olympic silver medallist and top BBC sports pundit Colin Jackson CBE was the guest speaker at the event, sharing insights into life as a top athlete and broadcaster.

Colin is an ambassador for Matrix Fitness, which, for the second year, was a category sponsor and the sponsor of the drinks reception at the event.

Fletcher Smith, an A-Level student at Belper School, won the Derbyshire County Council Young Sports Leader/Young Coach of the Year award, for his considerable efforts at the club.

Belper Rugby Club’s secretary Jackie Dyer explained: “He’s been with us for two or three seasons now and in that time Fletcher has shown himself to be a good player, a good leader and a good coach.

“He’s the kind of guy who always puts his hand to help others and the club as a whole. He’s captain of his age group side, coaches them when he can, he’s got involved with the Amber Valley School Sports Partnership, he helps to run our Tag Rugby Festival, and he’s got involved with the seniors, helping with first aid and things like that.

“Along with the club’s Jake Holmes, he won the RFU’s gold award for sports leadership, which is a very rare achievement.

“He’s also one of the RFU’s young rugby ambassadors, and he’s a committed clubman so it’s good to see all his hard work being recognised.”

The awards are organised by Derbyshire Sport.
