Good vibes around Belper RUFC

Belper Rugby Club first team captain Callum Schofield has been pleased with progress over the summer months, as management and players gear up for what they hope will be a successful season.

Schofield and co kick off their 2018/19 campaign in the Midlands 3 East (North) with a trip to Sleaford on 8th September before returning home the following Saturday to host Spalding.

Belper faced both sides during last season’s league campaign which resulted in a ninth-place finish for the Derbyshire outfit - and Schofield said they are looking to improve on that this time around.

He said: “We’re shaping up really nicely. Last season was a tough season for our first team, especially the second half.

“We had a lot of injuries at the same time, many of which were long term, which meant we had 41 different players playing for the first team over the course of the season, which is crazy numbers really.

“A lot of these players are now back and on their way to being at full fitness ready for September. We have also had a couple of great new additions to the squad which will give us more depth moving forward.”

Pre-season training sessions have seen around 30 players turn up for each practice and the club are on the look out for more.

“There is a great atmosphere at the club at the minute and it really is a great place to play rugby,” said Schofield. “The boys are happy and the numbers at training week in week out demonstrate this.

“We are averaging over 30 week in week out at the minute which is fantastic for this level and shows our desire to progress as a club. It’s also great to see a few young lads coming through from our under-18s.

“The numbers at training for the women are also high on a regular basis which is adding to the club atmosphere even further. The on-going facility improvements are doing nothing but develop this desire to improve further.”

And added: “Head coach Martin Holmes has really got the boys champing at the bit!

“They are putting the work in and this is really showing in some great training performances. Hopefully the numbers at training and the work ethic from the team continues. If it does I am sure it will be a great season for the club.”

Training for both male and female teams takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week from 7-8.30pm at Strutts Playing Field on Derby Road. All new players welcome.
