Last Saturday saw the Pinvin Road Race take place in Worcester.
On an extremely cold day, it was at least better than when the event had to be cancelled last year due to snow.
Belper Bicycle Club riders Bill Cotton, Mike Allen and Derrick Woodings travelled down for this race.
Mike and Derrick were riding their first race of the year. Bill and Derrick had entered two previous events in March but due to four weeks off the bike for Derrick, following a bad training crash, he was unable to get enough training to compete. Mike was opting to make this prestigious event his first serious road target of 2014.
They rode a race of five laps on an eight-mile circuit for riders of age 55-plus. The race started at a very brisk pace which was a welcome warm-up for their cold bodies.
Derrick was up front for the first three miles but unfortunately suffered a front wheel puncture, resulting in an early bath. The race carried on and Mike Allen launched a vicious attack on lap two, gaining a substantial lead, eventually increasing this to a five-minute gap for him to win and to achieve his first target for 2014.
Mike then won his age category in the LVRC Solihull Circuit Race at the weekend by winning a bunch sprint. Derrick Woodings managed an age category win in what was a tough West Midlands race.
