Belper men’s hockey team went down 4-2 to Doncaster in their first home game of the Conference North season.
An early penalty corner was converted by Joe Morrison, after the home side were slow to start the game.
Fortunately Doncaster’s impressive start only served to galvanise Belper’s efforts and a clinical far-post slap from forward Chris Beastall was finished with aplomb by captain Ben Walton to make it 1-1 at half-time.
An indifferent first half was equally matched by the second, with Belper starting strong - as Sam Dixon finished a well-taken field goal, to put Belper 2-1 ahead.
However, the game took a turn for the worse just five minutes later, with some umpiring decisions frustrating the home side.
This led to a flurry of cards, meaning Belper were not at full strength for the remainder of the game - which led to Doncaster capitalising with two goals on minutes 46 and 61, as they surged into a 3-2 lead.
With minutes to go, Belper were back up to full strength but chasing the game, and again decided to remove goalkeeper Neil Slane from the contest.
This all-out attack method failed to yield an equaliser though, as the visitors went on to grab a late fourth and seal the points and inflict a second defeat on Belper.
Belper will be aiming to finally get points on the board when Olton visit on Saturday (12.30pm).
