The 10th European Seniors Badminton Championships have just been completed in the Bulgarian capital city of Sofia and Belper’s Janet Fletcher has turned in a gold-medal-winning performance at the event.
Janet was chosen as a member of the England Over 60s squad to compete in the Championships and pulled off something of a shock result with badminton partner Bob Bell as they became part of the English contingent that stormed to the top of the medal table, for the second Championships in succession.
In the Over 60s Mixed Doubles Event, Janet, with partner Bob Bell (Cornwall) caused the major shock of the whole tournament.
As an unseeded pair, they beat opponents from Russia and Germany, before going on to defeat the top three seeds to take the Gold medals and successfully claim the 2012 European Champions title for their country, after a particularly impressive display.
In the Final, they defeated the No1 Seeds, Sue Ely and Brian Wright, who are the reigning World Champions.
The prestigious championships were staged over the course of six days, at the Arena Armeec in Sofia, which is the most modern sports facility in Bulgaria.
A 92-strong contingent from England attended the championships and came away with a medals haul of 58, including 16 gold medals.
