Belper Hockey Club’s Junior Boys ended a long, long season at the National Indoor Finals last weekend.
After a lengthy and very successful campaign, Belper U16 Boys went to Aldersley Leisure Complex, Wolverhampton, for the National Final Tournament of the England Hockey U16 Indoor Championships.
Having just finished as runners-up in the National Outdoor Championships, hopes were high for a good result, but maybe this was just a tournament too far.
The Boys struggled to find anything like their normal form and, sadly came away without a win, but credit is due to the squad of Dom Bennett, James Casha, George Collier, Jamie Franklin, Alex Cox, Nat Partridge, Ben Clague, Joe Darby, Ben Hurst and Tom Hurst, with coaches James Cozens and Ben Lamb, for such a fine season.
At the same time, the U18 Boys took the long trip down to the fantastic facilities at Whitgift School in Croydon for the U18 National Indoor Finals.
With no great expectations, the team played out of their skins, and with two wins, a draw and a loss in the pool matches, just missed out on a place in the semi-finals on goal difference. All in all, this was a fantastic effort by the squad of Toby Hooker, Chris Handley, Danny Buckland, Nick Pankhurst, Alex Robey, Alesandro Congiu, Charlie Falkingham and Jacob Bullock.
This is the first time in the club’s history that Belper’s Junior Boys have reached the Indoor National Finals, a tremendous achievement, and credit is due to Head Junior Coach Ben Lamb.
