Three swimmers from Belper Marlin Swimming Club qualified for the Midlands Championships, held over the last few weeks in Coventry.

Leah Hollingsworth, Joshua Horobin and Amy Neild are the swimmers who have won through to the prestigious event.

Thirteen-year-old Marlin swimmer Amy attends Belper School and she started swim lessons aged just three-and-a-half.

She has been swimming with Marlin for the last three years.

Amy gained her qualifying time for the Midlands in 1.12.12 for her excellent 100-metres backstroke.

She spends a lot of her spare time attending galas and this is the first time she is attending the Midlands Championships.

Twelve-year-old Joshua Horobin also attends Belper School.

He started swimming at the age of three and progressed through swimming lessons and joined four strokes swimming academy before joining Belper Marlin at the age of nine.

He gained his Midland qualifying time at the City of Derby meet April 2012 in the 100-metre breaststroke in a brilliant time of 1.22.64 and it is also his first time at the Midlands Championships.

In his spare time he enjoys bike rides and supporting the Rams.

Sixteen-year-old Leah Hollingsworth is a student at John Flamsteed School in year 11 and is currently taking her GCSE’s.

She swam in the 50, 100 and 200 metre breaststroke events at the Youth Midlands Championships narrowly missing out on the finals in each event.

Leah only began swimming at the age of 12 when she joined Marlins four years ago, but in that time she trained for a year with the elite county swim squad Derventio eXcel and also attended the nationals last year where she made the semi finals in the 200-metres breaststroke - a great achievement for this exceptional breaststroke swimmer.

Club head coach Mike Brett expressed his delight for the three swimmers.

“I am very proud of all three swimmers, they work very hard and the results speak for themselves.”
