Belper-based badminton player Janet Fletcher recorded her fifth successive Masters tournament success with a double victory at the Yorkshire Gold Open.

Fletcher, who has just moved up to the over-65s’ age category, formed two new partnerships to land the ladies’ doubles with Eileen Carley, of Yorkshire, and also the mixed doubles with Barry Smethurst, of Devon. The win in the final of the latter event was particularly satisfying because they beat the reigning world over-65s’ champions to take the title.

It was also a successful weekend for Derbyshire’s Sarah Pulley, who won the ladies’ over-35s’ singles event and finished dual runner-up in the ladies’ doubles and also a very competitive over-35s’ mixed doubles with her county teammate, Robin Harris.

The Yorkshire tournament was one of many that are played on the Badminton England Masters Circuit.
