Belper Marlin Swimming Club and Derventio eXcel swimmer Joshua Horobin attended the National Age Group Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge recently.

Qualifying for the 100m Breaststroke he was ranked seventh in his age group.

Joshua joined Belper Marlin aged nine after learning to swim with 4 Strokes Swimming Academy. Identified early on by the coaching team at Marlin as having an eye for breaststroke, this became his number one choice of stroke in competitive and team galas.

Joshua swam at the Midlands Championships last year and missed out on a national time. However, this year the experience paid off and Joshua made the qualification time required.

Training hard through this season with both Derventio and Belper Marlin Swimming Club, Joshua has made great progress and was very pleased when he qualified for this year’s nationals.

In the heats at Ponds Forge, Joshua swam in the penultimate heat where he qualified for the finals in a time of 1.12.65 a personal best time, going into the final he was ranked third fastest.

Joshua swam the final in another personal best time of 1.12.18.

Turning after the first 50m in seventh place, he moved through the field to take a well-deserved third position and gain a bronze medal.

Joshua also swam the following day in the heats and finals of the 4 x 100m Medley Relay.

He was alongside fellow Belper Marlin and Derventio Swimmer Elliott Stubbs, Colin Cameron and Callum Gascoyne of Derventio.

The team went into the event ranked 13th, swam a great heat and qualified for the finals.

They finished again in a well deserved eighth overall.
