Mike ‘The Missile’ wins his fifth road race of the year

BELPER Bicycle Club Rider Mike Allen won his fifth age category road race of the year last weekend, and this being his 80th win in his racing career so far.

Mike travelled up to the Steve Gutteridge Memorial Road race, at Saighton (near Chester) with fellow team mate Derrick Woodings.

From the off the large group set off at an incredible pace on the crosswind section down towards the bottom turn at Aldford, but after the left turn onto the Aldford road the wind was a block headwind, but even this didn’t limit the speed of the bunch. After many minor attacks the group stayed intact.

The main protagonists in the first few laps were Alan Kemp, Alistair Cameron, Dave Hargreaves, Allan Ramsey and Ken Corbett. Mike Allen was playing a waiting game but as soon as a small group formed up front he was on it immediately.

Derrick tried an attack on the fifth lap although found himself on his own and eventually a group of three caught and rode past him, with Derrick not being able to raise his speed enough to keep with them.

The sprint finish was led out by the Mike ‘The Missile’ Allen, but he was not able to hold off Alan Kemp again, with Alan winning the race and Mike finishing second, but first in his age category.

Derrick finished at the back of this group and when he later checked the average speed was 23mph, so a pretty fast race.
