After the freak storms of Saturday, the weather was thankfully much improved on Sunday as Belper Bicycle Clubb’s Mike Allen and Derrick Woodings were in action in the 20th Tour of the Wolds veteran road race in North East Lincolnshire.

In this 40-mile EFG race, there were just under 30 starters making the field.

Mike abandoned on the penultimate lap not having found his form in the race, so his Belper teammate Derrick was left to battle it out for a placing in a sprint finish.

The charge out of the bottom corner of the course into the finishing lane was fast and furious and Derrick said his legs were burning.

Fortunately the pace eased and he made his way up the field determined to get a position. In Derrick’s G age category Brian Sunter (Condor RC) was very strong , followed by team-mate John Ginley and John Elliot. Derrick managed to edge past John Elliot but couldn’t get past the Condor RC pair, giving him third for his age group.

Meanwhile Belper BC veteran Bill Cotton was in action in Hungerford for the 40-mile Newbury Road Race, finishing 2nd overall and winning his age category.
