Belper Hockey Club’s Boys Under 16s team’s season reached a successful climax last weekend as they won a silver medal at the England Hockey Under 16 Club Cup Finals, held at Cannock Hockey Club.
Having topped their local and regional qualifying groups, the squad joined seven other teams from across the country to battle it out for the title.
It was the first time in the club’s history that the U16 Boys squad had reached the finals of the National Championship.
Belper started well with a 3-0 victory over Ashmoor Hockey Club and followed this up with a 3-1 victory against Bromley & Beckenham H.C.
A 1-1 draw against Ben Rhydding was enough for Belper to top their pool and reach the final where they met Old Loughtonians H.C. from Chigwell.
A high scoring final unfortunately saw the Belper team, coached by Ben Lamb and managed by Judy Hooker, suffer a 5-2 defeat to win the silver medal.
Philip Handley, director of HSKS Greenhalgh, Chartered Accountants & Business Advisors, who were the squad’s shirt sponsors for the finals, said, “The boys have had a wonderful season and played some fabulous hockey so to reach the National Finals and be the second best Boys Under 16 team in the country is a fantastic achievement.
“The squad is playing in an international tournament in Holland next weekend and is the only representative from Great Britain, so we all hope that their success continues.”
