The Lincoln Ridge Road Race, a 60+ event at Norwell, was another successful weekend for the Belper vets, Derrick Woodings and Mike Allen.
On the second lap Mike put in a vicious attack splitting the field.
Derrick was pushed on to the grass at the roadside by a struggling rider and with the break now established a chase was organised, but to no avail the group of seven were too strong, containing favourites Mike, Phil Etches(Lincoln) and John Elliot (Alford).
Derrick resigned himself to conserving energy for an all out attack on the last lap. This almost succeeded but his age group rival Pete Ryalls organised a chase to bring him back. He was pleased to be able to manage Pete in the long uphill finish, easing himself off Pete’s wheel with 300m to go to outdistance him finishing in 4th place in the bunch sprint. This placed him 12th in the event, but first again in the 70+ category. In the real race up front Mike had managed to split the break but had to settle for second in both the race and his 60+ age group.
