Belper Bicycle Club’s veteran Derrick Woodings rode the Darley Moor Circuit Race) last Saturday.
This was the third and last of a series of 3 EFGH events, with this race at the circuit near Ashbourne being 1 hour and five laps (approx. 30 miles).
The start line boasted a slightly larger field than usual, with a number of new contestants deciding to turn up and sign on.
The race opened at a cracking pace as soon as the flag was dropped at around a constant 25-30 mph rate.
After a few laps, the heavens opened, thoroughly soaking all the riders and resembling a collective ice bucket challenge.
With five laps to go, Derrick chanced his arm and stayed away for a complete lap, riding on the limit.
When a breakaway group then caught him he was able to latch on to these for the final three laps.
The race ended with a sprint for the line with National Champion Alan Kemp (Weaver Valley CC) the victor.
Derrick was rewarded for his efforts winning the G age group in what proved to be a good, hard workout despite the inclement weather for those taking part.
