Confident Belper Strutt Club are one of four teams through to the semi-finals of the Captains’ Cup Team Aggregate competition in the Darley Dale and District Snooker League.
Strutt, who are also flying high in the league, topped Group A after a convincing 309-246 victory over Bolehill Institute No.2, who also qualified for the semis as group runners-up. Justin Weller and Keith Robertson top-scored for the respective teams, and the Belper side now play Alfreton Palmer Morewood in the last four on Wednesday, April 6.
Alfreton took the runners-up spot in Group B, despite losing 289-262 in a breathtaking final qualifying game at home to Edgefold Club Matlock No.2, who duly topped the group. The hosts made all the early running, with father and son Kevin and Jamie Rowland each getting the better of tight frames to hand them a 16-point lead. And it wasn’t long before Simon Mayes increased this to 45. But a 73-45 win for Tom Chambers (21 break) put the match in the balance before he and Rob Dicken (27 break) secured the doubles leg 85-41 to complete the turnaround.
Alfreton’s defeat meant they could still mathematically surrender second place to Bolehill Institute No.1. But a 307-264 win at Matlock Golf Club was not enough for Bolehill, even though Colin Marchington and Ian Birks were in excellent form to cancel out an opening-frame success by Ian McKay (31 break).
In the week’s other Captain’s Cup match, Edgefold Club Matlock No.1 kept Matlock Club at bay, winning 344-312, despite losing three of the five frames. Nathan Haymes amassed 101 points in a barnstorming display of potting.
