Belper Bicycle Club’s Derrick Woodings won his G age category in the Thaxted Road Race.
Racing on an oval circuit of just under ten miles in Essex, there were just over four laps of their event, making a total of 46 miles and with a reasonable climb on each lap.
Derrick positioned himself at the head of the race and was easily coping with the Debden climb, although he later found himself marooned at the rear, finding he had to twice chase back on with others, once almost becoming tailed off approaching Thaxted on the second lap.
There were several abortive attacks but all were nailed back until Dick Naylor (Abellio SFA Racing) attacked and built up a substantial lead.
One or two more tried to get across to him but it was really hard o with the wind making the going tough. Mike Allen, also in the race, tried to get across but he was a marked man and couldn’t escape.
The last time up the Debden climb was crucial, the main field now down to about 20 attacked the climb at a fast pace.
Derrick managed to hang in there and made the back of the group just as the gradient eased.
Now it became tactical and Derrick managed to just hang in for 12th overall and first in the G category.
