Training plans were adapted by the club coaches to fit in with restrictions at the time.

The lockdown period also saw an increase in virtual competition at the club, although they are unofficial competitions and won’t be registered on the UK rankings.

Seven of the club's athletes competed in the Valhalla Throws Academy Virtual Shot Put Competitions, with three events taking place across May and June - with all seven athletes recording unofficial personal bests.

Coach Jonathan Wain took to the circle alongside the athletes, competing in the V45 age-group and led the way throwing a best of 7m65 with the 7.26kg shot.

Mark Wearing also made a fabulous return to competition, after four years away from the sport, in the senior men’s age group - hoisting the 7.26kg shot put out to 12m80.

Josh Turkington, in his first year as an U17, threw an amazing 9m50 with the 5kg shot.

There were also U15s in action with Jacob Peers-Wain and Matthew Drew throwing the 4kg shot 6m04 and 4m31 respectively and for the girls Lottie Hall had a best of 8m05 and Isabelle Fellows 8m78 with the 3kg shot.

Javelin wasn’t as easy to organise because of the distances and safety considerations, but two athletes took part in the UK Javelin Throw Association Virtual Competition on 20th June.

Lilly Baines in her first year as an U17 recorded an unofficial personal best of 27m45 with the 500g javelin.

Isabelle Fellows headed to Burton to take part in the socially distanced competition with her javelin coach and some of her training partners, where she threw the 500g javelin out to 34m34 as a first year U15.
