North Derbyshire RC’s Richard Start wins 10k in Scunthorpe

North Derbyshire RC’s Richard Start won the rescheduled 'Run Your Heart Out' 10k at Scunthorpe – equalling his second best 10k time of 31:25.

He was 18 seconds clear of runner-up Shane Robinson (31:43) from the Lincoln Wellington club.

Start last raced a 10k in that time at Salford in September.

All the other seven NDRC runners - Dean Mclaughlin (39:44), Ian Monaghan (40:54), Andy Hall (42:28), Paul Boden (47:32), Grace Walker (48:32), Melanie Hunt (49:56) and Sara Thompson (50:02) – all finished well up in a bumper field of above 1,400 runners.

At the Carsington Half-Marathon and 10k on a stormy morning a field of 420 finished the second morning's running of the event, with NDRC'S Chris Hunt (2:00:03) Andrew Elliott (2:03:28 in only his second half-marathon) and Rebecca Thomas (2:06:26) finishing within six minutes of each other.

A further 216 runners finished the 10k, amongst them Mandy Curtis, who ran an hour and a few seconds.

A day earlier there were five NDRC runners who successfully completed the undulating half-marathon, whilst James Finney 52:12 and Michelle Bower 67:57 completed the 10k.

First back for the club in the half-marathon was Matt Helmsley, who finished 20th in 1:37:07, followed by Julie Cooper 1:49:24, Bob Gardner 1:59:52, Neil Melton 2:10:15, Emma Hicken 2:12:37 and Angela Owen 2:27:29.

Julie Cooper won the first lady vet 40 prize, and Bob Gardner the first male vet 60 prize.

At the National Cross-Country Championships at Wollaton Park, Nottingham, six NDRC men represented the club at the prestigious event.

The men's senior race, run over more than eight miles of tough, undulating rain-saturated terrain, attracted a bumper field of more than 1,700 runners.

The first club runner home was Martin Dawson in 315th in 51:58. He was followed by Michael Geoghan 56:41, Tom Topham 63:01, Steve Bennett 73:41, Steve Beddoe 75:58 and Andy Lees 79:50.

The race was won by Calum Johnson, of Gateshead, in 43:36.
