Schoolchildren captivated by coaching session

SIXTY year five and six pupils at Herbert Strutt Primary School, many of whom had taken part in the annual Tag Festival at Belper RUFC in April, enjoyed a glorious afternoon developing their tag rugby skills thanks to a coaching team from Belper Rugby Club.

“The children really enjoyed taking part in the Tag Festival this year, and we jumped at the chance to have the club coaches visit the school,” said teacher Damian Banks.

“Firstly two of the coaches visited us at an assembly and talked about the Rugby Club and how they work with the younger players. The children were captivated with the demonstration of tackling with the tackle bags. It really made the pupils want to get involved.”

Two of the coaches, Frazer Kent and Laura White, (17) were members of the Club’s Youth Volunteer team, and are experienced players who have been involved at Belper RUFC for many years.

Merv Holmes, director of mini, junior and colts at the club said: “I must thank the school for inviting us in. We developed our team of youth volunteers last season so that we could work with schools and have realistic role models for the children.

“A number of the kids have said that they want to join us at the beginning of the season this September. Our involvement in the community will continue this year as we have been invited into other local schools. We intend to run another Tag Tournament in line with the World Cup later this year.”

The club is hosting a week-long Summer Camp running from Monday, August 15, with guest coaches from Tonga and South Africa travelling over to run the sessions throughout the week.

The camp is open to all children between the ages of 6 and 16, regardless of experience. For more information, visit the rugby club website or call Sarah Hewson on 07545 786068.
