Belper teacher wins national photography awards
A Belper primary teacher is celebrating extra-curricular success after collecting a hat-trick of awards in a national photography competition.
Roxanne Bunn, 28, picked up three honours at the Guild of Photographers awards dinner on Saturday, February 4.
She was named runner-up in the contemporary portraiture category, a top ten international photographer in the people category, and also made a member of the Photographers’ Bar.
Roxanne said: “I’m amazed, shocked, happy—I really didn’t think my work was good enough yet. The standard of work from other artists was exceptional.
“I wasn’t expecting anything, but to be named runner-up for my portrait was the most surprising. To be ranked so highly out of 10,000 entries is an unbelievable honour.”
The guild is essentially a national camera club, where members can submit work for monthly awards, mentoring and critical feedback.
A member of the Photographers’ Bar is a distinction awarded to those achieving an exceptional level of professional skill and consistency.
Roxanne said: “I like being a part of it, it’s something which helps me to get better and better all the time.
“It’s the same way with my job, I like to learn something new every day and feel like I’m making progress. The competitions make me strive to do keep improving.”
Roxanne has worked at Turnditch School, on Ashbourne Road, for the last five years and pursues photography as a hobby at the weekends and during the holidays.
She said: “Teaching will always come first, it’s who I am and what I do. Photography is something I do for pleasure.
“Most of my work features friends and family, mainly fine art portraits, children, pets—but I’m starting to get busy with requests, so I’m considering it as a possible business.”
It is very much a family affair, something Roxanne says was inspired by her granddad, who loved to capture every moment as she grew up.
The portrait which caught the judges attention was of her sister Sinead Bunn, 26, who is a professional ballerina with the Bayerische Statt Ballett in Munich.
