Big Adventures Youth Theatre arrive at the Guildhall in Derby next week to present the regional premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical with the peculiar title – Urinetown.
Set in a dystopian future where everyone has to pay for the ‘privilege to pee’, this hilarious musical riffs on everything from Brecht to Bernstein to tell the story of one man’s struggle to defeat the system and win justice for all.
Big Adventures is the brainchild of Dave Culling and Caroline Reader and has been performing in Derby for almost 20 years.
Their youth theatre has tackled an ambitious array of shows from West Side Story, to Singin’ In The Rain to, Nicholas Nickleby,.
All the time they are pushing the young members of group to realise their full potential.
After rejecting more obvious shows, this year Dave and Caroline decided to take on a lesser-known musical, Urinetown.
Dave said: “Urinetown is one of the greatest musicals out there.
“The tunes are infectious, the script is a hoot, but there’s a vein of social satire running through the piece too.
“We held auditions for the show and were overwhelmed by the response.
“We now have around 50 local youngsters bringing this musical to the stage in Derby for the very first time and that’s exciting for them and us.”
Caroline added : “Our youth members are really sinking their teeth into the demanding material and love the show as much as we do.
“We feel so lucky that we’re presenting a regional premiere and we hope local theatre-goers come and see it and laugh like drains.”
Urinetown is at the Guildhall from Wednesday, July 6, to Saturday, July 9 at 7.30pm each night.
Tickets priced £14.25 and £11.25 are available now from the box office on 01332 255800 or online at www.derbylive.co.uk
