Nikolaj Znaider will conduct The Hallé’s concert when they next visit Derby’s Assembly Rooms on Thursday, May 9, from 7.30pm.

The concert will feature Sibelius’s Finlandia, Stravinsky’s ballet score Petrushka and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 6, commonly known as the “Pathétique”.

There is nothing more Finnish than Sibelius’s tone poem Finlandia. Originally presented right at the end of the 19th century, Finlandia is a soaring and exhilarating score which becomes increasingly triumphant in its mood.

Stravinsky’s Petrushka is one of his most brilliant achievements that bursts with the joys and energy of youth.

This vibrant and colourful ballet score, originally premiered in 1911, tells the story of three puppets that magically come to life and experience the full range of human emotions. It can be heard here in its 1947 revised version.

Tchaikovsky’s wistful and heartbreaking Sixth Symphony was premiered nine days before the composer’s death in 1893.

It takes you on a journey that starts with love and passion and concludes with sorrow and melancholy.

Tickets for The Halle are priced at £16.25-£29.25 with concessions, group and family tickets available and can be purchased on 01332 255800.
