Lady Sings the Blues is the name of a show at Derby’s Assembly Rooms on Friday, February 14, from 8pm.
It features British Jazz Awards Best Vocalist winner Val Wiseman in a celebration of the mesmerising music of Billie Holiday.
Val Wiseman will be accompanied by seven of the UK’s finest jazz musicians, including bandleader Digby Fairweather (trumpet), Alan Barnes (tenor sax and clarinet), Roy Williams (trombone), Brian Dee (piano), Pat McCarthy (guitar), Len Skeat (double bass) and Boddy Worth (drums).
Between them, these musicians have amassed a staggering 37 British Jazz Awards, and along with Val Wiseman will be celebrating the legendary music of Billie Holiday.
The evening will showcase many songs from the Billie Holiday repertoire, including those that are often overlooked.
Songs will be sung chronologically through the 30s, 40s and 50s, frequently using the original arrangements and performed with superb style and vitality, all adding up to provide a fantastic night of musical entertainment.
