What do you get if you cross a musicologist having a profound knowledge of blues music and a very distinctive voice with a tight little band of musicians who have known each other for years and perform really well together?
The answer is The Z.Z. Birmingham Band, who will be performing in the Top Bar @ The Queen’s Head, Chesterfield Road, Belper, on Saturday, November 19.
ZZ himself certainly dominates the stage but the band is tight and right behind him. A solid rhythm section of bass from Elmos Grandez (a.k.a. Jake Billington) and Adam on drums with excellent lead/slide/blues guitar from virtuoso Paul Evans (sometimes known as Rubio).
Even though he now lives down south, ZZ is still happy to return to the old stomping ground, especially as many of his old muchachos still hang around locally.
However, he does live a long distance away and his stamina might not be what it was (although his voice and performance are both as good as they ever were) so Arthur is hinting that he might not tour much in the future.
So, although Paul, Jake and Adam still perform together locally, this might be your last chance to see the band, with the legendary ZZ Birmingham upfront, in this neck of the woods.
The gig has been arranged by BelperMusicAndArts Band. Doors open at 8.15pm for a 9pm start and it’s £7 on the door to get in.
