DERBYSHIRE: Labour launches manifesto ahead of council elections

The party has pledged to create jobs, help businesses grow and provide a future for the county’s young people.

Derbyshire Labour group leader Anne Western said: “Labour offers Derbyshire a real alternative.

“Our vision for Derbyshire is a place with a thriving economy where hard work is properly rewarded and our children have a bright future.

“We will build a Derbyshire where people feel safe and supported, a place where all people are valued and all feel that their voice is heard.”

She said Derbyshire’s controlling Conservatives lacked a “clear sense of purpose” and added her party had challeged the opposition over a number of controversial decisions – including cutting £m from the winter gritting budget.

Derbyshire’s Labour party manifesto makes five pledges:

• building a strong economy which creates jobs, grows businesses and provides a future for young people

• defending the NHS and tackling health inequalities

• fighting crime and building stronger communities

• practical support for children and families and high quality council-run services for the elderly, disabled and their carers

• putting communities at the heart of decision making

Derbyshire County Council has been under Conservative control since since 2009.

Before then the authority had been Labour-led for 28 years.

The county council elections will take place on Thursday, May 2.
