The plans, submitted to Amber Valley Borough Council, propose building a single-storey store on Main Street on the site of the former WMC.

It is proposed that the store will be “small in scale” but with job opportunities created locally both in the construction of the store and also in terms of retail roles.

A spokesperson for Central England Co-operative said: “We can confirm that we are currently working with a developer with a view to opening a full service convenience food store on Main Street, Horsley Woodhouse.

“We pride ourselves on being a local community retailer which strives to make a real and significant contribution to people in the areas in which we trade.

“As part of our vision to be the UK’s best consumer co-operative society we have ambitious plans for growth in areas where there is a demand for our services and where we can increase customer choice.

“Our research shows that there is local demand for a convenience store in Horsley Woodhouse and we believe it would offer local people a really useful amenity.

“A planning application has been submitted by the developer and it is now the responsibility of local planning officials to determine its merits.

“We are hopeful that they will see the benefits to the local community and that we will be welcoming new customers through our doors later this year.”

A decision on the plans is expected to be made by AVBC’s planning board in June.
